Many people suffering from acne throw caution to the winds, jumping on the first acne treatment that they find. But for those people who do their research, arming themselves with the knowledge to truly fight there skin problems, many options can be found. Among these options are products termed a natural acne treatment. This post will discuss some of those natural cures, which I hope you all decide to give a try. These treatments are not only safer to use than many of the other solutions available, some say they can be more effective.
- Olive Oil
- Olive oil has been recommended as effective natural acne treatment and has been used for many centuries to heal many other ailments including colds and coughs. Treatment can be either done externally or by adding extra virgin olive oil to your diet.
There are three ways I have found for using olive oil treatment on your skin:- Using an olive oil based cleanser
- Applying extra virgin olive oil directly to your skin in a circular motion, then cleaning the oil off with a glycerin soap.
- Using the extra virgin olive oil as a facial masque
If using as part of the diet, a typical dosage would be one tablespoon in your normal food twice a day.
- Tea Tree oil
- Because tea tree oil (also referred to as melaluca oil) can kill bacteria, applying topical tea tree oil to acne lesions has been thought to kill Propionibacterium acnes, the skin-dwelling bacteria that is involved in causing acne. While any topical acne treatment can cause irritation, tea tree oil is less likely than many products. This is typically diluted (<5% solution) with aloe or similar.
- Licorice Root Extract
- Licorice root extract possesses natural anti-inflammatory agents that can soothe skin affected by blemishes. If also assists in limiting the production of irritants in the body that contribute to the formation of acne. Topical usage involves applying the pungent scented extract directly to the skin, making sure to give already formed pimples a direct shot and giving the rest of your problem areas a good once over. Don’t overuse though.
- Green Tea
- Green tea’s antioxidants have been shown to be highly beneficial to acne prevention. One study compared using a 3% green tea solution with the use of a 4% benzoyl peroxide solution, one of the highest recommended treatments. The results were almost identical. One interesting method I found for using green tea as an acne treatment solution was to make yourself a cup of green tea and drink it. Then use the tea bag to rub over your skin.
So there you have it. A little information on using natural products in your fight against acne. Most of the products I have discussed can be found at your local health food store, as well as some local pharmacies. I highly recommend that you consider these natural products as part of your skin treatment regimen.

I like the idea of using natural remedies. It worries me that many of the products purchased at chemists are full of harsh chemicals that are no good for the body. It particularly makes sense to also treat acne from the inside – as the skin is the largest organ of the body.

That is fantastic information – I never knew any of the above products could be used on acne to help clear up your skin. You learn something new every day!
Incidentally, a trick I learned a long time ago in college was to dab a little bit of toothpaste on the pimple for about 15-30 minutes, maybe a little more, then rinse it off. It really helped to dry it out and make it disappear within a day or two. FYI, it only worked with the “original” flavors of each major brand. This trick did not work with gel toothpaste, which caused irritation and dry, flaky skin, and basically made matters worse.
I wonder if you have any idea what ingredient(s) are in toothpaste that help fight against acne, and whether they still make these toothpastes the same way. Has anyone else heard of anyone using this method?

When using natural products test them on an area other than your face first to make sure your skin likes it. It is always good to do an allergy test.
I love olive oil on my skin though. I use it on my hands and feet when they feel too dry. In the summer I will put a little olive oil on each foot and put them in a gallon size zip lock bag and have my own foot sauna while I relax, or blog, or read. It is amazing how it softens your feet.

Beauty is more than skin deep. Make a cup of tea and have a nice salad
with avocados and some olive oil. Save the left overs.
