Natural Acne Treatment – Revisited

Last week I posted about “Natural Acne Treatment: Safe And Effective“. This listed some of the more commonly accepted natural treatments, but certainly not all. Sandy made an interesting comment about how she had used toothpaste when she was in collage to treat her acne. So, I decided to follow up with yet some more home remedies that have been used with some success. Thank you Sandy ;)

Toothpaste – For Minty Fresh Skin
Well, let’s start with toothpaste, since Sandy brought it up. Acne.org has product reviews for many of the different treatments. In the case of toothpaste, a total of 504 people reviewed its effectiveness, and it won a laudable 3.5/5 rating for how well it works.
Let’s examine the ingredients of some toothpastes to see why it may help get rid of zits. One common ingredient is sodium pyrophosphate, which is meant to remove the calcium and magnesium from our saliva. When applied to the skin, it also will remove any calcium from it, and therefore allow the dead skin to be removed. This will in turn tend to unclog the pores. Another common ingredient is Silica, which is used in many other acne treatments. While there have been no formal studies to date, many people swear by toothpaste as an effective acne home remedy.
Simply apply directly to your problems spots before bedtime. Some of the reviews stated that this has left a stain, so you may want to experiment with the amount of time you leave it on. Just make certain you use actual toothpaste, not the gel based toothpastes. Hope this answered your questions, Sandy.
Salt and Vinegar – Pickle Those Zits
A solution of salt water, with or without vinegar, can help clear up your acne both by drying your skin (removing excess oils) and by helping disinfect. Wash your face twice a day with a salt water (and vinegar if you like) solution. As far as the amounts of salt, I see varied recommendations, from just a dash to thick enough to apply and stick to the area. Both methods recommend applying directly to the affected area, allowing it to stay for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinsing it off.
Fruits – Healthy Inside and Out
Fruits can also be an affective natural acne treatment. Try applying strawberry leaves directly to the zit and leave the on for a while. Fresh lemon juice (not concentrated) or lime mixed with rose water is another acne home remedy you can try. Apply to your face and leave for 15 minutes. Try this one for 15 days and you just might be amazed at the results! Ground orange peel, mixed with water into a paste, can be effective in treating an outbreak. Apply and leave for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse the paste off with warm water. Papaya juice is also widely held to be effective. Fresh tomato paste can be used much like the orange peel paste as well. The one thing all these fruit-based acne home remedies have in common is their astringent properties. Removal of excess oil and dirt is one key to fighting acne.
More Plant-Based Acne Home Remedies
In the same vein as the fruits discussed above, there are many herbs and plants that have also proven to be effective acne home remedies. A mixture of the oil extract of witch hazel, sweet fennel, and tea in water applied 2-3 times per day has been shown to be effective in fighting acne. Methi (fenugreek) leaves, crushed into a paste, can be useful when applied for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing. Crushed garlic works as an effective acne home remedy as well, although most people forgo this one simply because of the smell. Aloe Vera has well-documented skin healing properties, and acts as an astringent as well. Cucumber, of course, has been a favorite to reduce all kinds of swellings for years. It can be more effective if you apply the cucumber in paste form. Finally, I’ll bet you didn’t know that ground radish or ground sesame seeds are also affective acne home remedies.

So there you have it. Several more natural acne treatment methods, some that I never would have thought of. Are there more? I am sure of it. Perhaps one of you has another method we haven’t discussed yet.

It makes sense that there are so many natural remedies out there. People have probably been treating acne long before the medical treatments came out. I have not heard of using strawberries before!

I think I will have a salad then brush my teeth. When you think about skin care it must go back to when there was first skin. I wonder if Adam and Eve got sunburned?
Keeping our bodies in an alkaline state rather than an acidic one can add so much to how our skin reacts. Did you know that the skin is considered an organ? I never really thought of it as anything but skin. It is the largest organ in the body. Our cells have memories and damaged cells will reproduce damaged cells. It takes time to correct that. Remember to let any pimples heal on their own because breaking them open only causes more harmful bacteria to enter the wound. Soon you will have pimple or zit buddies where there might have only been one.

Scrubbing your face is not good. Treat it gently and do not rub rub rub in those moisturizers or creams. Let the skin absorb it.

Find the foods that will decrease the acidic quality of your body. I have some ph strips I bought at a health food store, and I run too high acidic, too. It is an ongoing battle with today’s over processed foods and our always in a hurry lifestyle.

Grab the orange not the orange juice. There is way too much sugar in the juice because it takes so many oranges to make the juice, and then all the fiber and good parts are gone. Oxygen destroys the vitamin C, so you better drink it fast.

These are some of the things my friend Colleen Moon has taught me over the past 4 years. I am happy to share.

I didn’t think I would be interested in this topic, but it turns out to be fascinating.

Very good-looking blog. However, I respectfully suggest breaking your paragraphs into no more than 4 or 5 lines long. Research shows that people are more likely to stay around and read short paragraphs, because they are so much easier to read.
