Acne Treatment: Not an Overnight Success

A good acne treatment system will perform each of the following:

  • help reduce excess production of oil
  • speed up the turnover of skin cells
  • combat bacterial infections
  • reduce the inflammation

While anyone suffering from acne wants to get rid of those pimples right away, it is important to recognize that instantaneous results are a myth. Most treatment programs will require between four and eight weeks to be affective. It is also not unusual that the skin condition gets worse before it gets better.

There are several options when it comes to the type of treatment you can use use.

Topical treatments are those that require you to apply a lotion to the affected areas. These types of treatments come in many forms: gels, lotions, washes, and creams. They may also merely be in the form of a soap. If you have oily skin, you may want to look at a treatment that contains alcohol, to help dry out the oil. If your skin is dry, you would want to find a treatment that also contained a moisturizer. One of the most common topical acne treatments is benzoyl peroxide. Some of the treatments may contain antibiotics, such as clindamycin, erythromycin, salicylic acid and sulfonamides, which help kill off the bacteria. These solutions can be found both over the counter and by prescription.

Antibiotics are another option used to treat mild to moderate acne. Prescriptions medications can be tried to control the inflammation and destroy the bacteria associated with pimples. Just keep in mind, though, that antibiotics typically will take a couple months to have any real noticable affect.

Additional treatment options that are showing great promise include laser therapy, light therapy, and cosmetic procedures.

Which type of treatment is right for you? If your acne problem is minor, you can experiment around with the different methods until you find one that works… but remember to give each method the time required to decide if it is right for you.

For moderate and severe acne, I highly recommend you ask a Dermatologist. They can work with you and your skin to come up with a solution that is right for you.

Whichever route you go, be patient! A cleaner, pimple free complexion is in your future, I am sure of that ;) .

I will go into much more detail on some of the different methods for treating acne in future posts. Until then…

I always wondered if stress in any way a contributing factor for acne?

Or is it something entirely different

Yes, clinical research has proven that there is a direct correlation between stress and the severity of your acne. This is because of two things. First, stress causes the adrenal glands to produce more male hormones, directly linked to acne. Stress also slows down the healing process, again making acne worse.

Thanks for pointing that out, Alex and Mike

More and more adults are getting acne now too. This is probably a result of the stressful lives more and more adults lead. It is no longer something faced just by teens. There are some really horrible painful types of acne, too. Even if you are scrubbing your face clean you can still get it. Actually scrubbing your skin is probably the worst thing you can do for it.

Yes, stress, not enough water to drink and living in a toxic environment…and then there’s the food we put inside our bodies…I think acne is caused by so many things – not just one. Which is why it is probably so hard to overcome. Which is why the advice in this blog is so accurate – you must be patient in order to give your body time to resolve the issues that are causing the acne.

The problem with teanagers well actually all of us is that w don’t have the patience to wait for creams or other treatments to work. That also causes stress.

I always had good success with using Neutragena soap when I was a teenager to keep things nice and clear, and now that I am in my 30s, if I run into any stress-related acne, I use this really cool product made out of black seeds called Acne Gel and Healing Skin Serum. You can probably google it.
