Acne and Acne Treatment – A Brief Discussion

Acne, zits, pimples…no matter what you call it, you are not alone. Acne is a common condition, and is not just for teenagers. To combat this condition, especially if you are the one suffering, can be done as long as you keep informed on the causes and treatments for acne. That is the purpose of this blog, after all ;) .

So what is acne? Quite simply, it is a condition that occurs from the over-production of oil by the oil glands in the skin. Normally, this oil is useful in keeping the skin lubricated, but sometimes the pores get blocked, or other problems result in trapping the oil under the skin. This in turn causes swelling in the skin and the bumps many call pimples.

The Causes of Acne

First, what does not cause acne, contrary to popular belief. There is no evidence that eating greasy or fatty foods will cause acne, though it is still a good idea to avoid those foods for other reasons.

There are four major factors that should be considered as responsible for causing pimples:

  • overactive oil glands
  • blockage of the skin pores
  • activity of normal skin bacteria
  • inflammation

Acne Treatment

Yes, this is why you are here! To learn about acne treatment…or how to take care of your skin so you totally avoid getting pimples in the first place. So here are a few items. I will discuss much in more detail in future posts, so come back as often as you like ;) !

Do you use a moisturizer? If so, take a close look at it to see if it contains oils. You might consider changing your moisturizer product to one with less oils. The same goes for other skin care products you may be using. The more oil you leave on your body, the more likely pimples are to occur.

If you wear makeup, make sure it is not clogging your pores. Always make sure to wash that makeup off each night before retiring to bed.

Taking a proactive approach to acne treatment is extremely important. You need to understand the magnitude of your acne problem as well as which type of acne you are experiencing. Don’t just look for the quick acting, short term treatments that are available. Instead be looking for that long term solution.

There are various creams and ointments that you can use which are often very effective, We will discuss some of those in future posts. In more severe cases your dermatologist may prescribe you medication which will help lessen the amount of pimples that develop.

Remember that you can control and cover the visible lesions on your skin and avoid embarrassment. Although it may take time to find the right treatment for you there are enough options out there that you will be able to find something that works.

Finally, don’t try to do it alone. If your acne is severe, a dermatologist can help you determine the acne treatment approach that is most suited to you and your skin.

Nice tips and I think the conclusion – “f your acne is severe, a dermatologist can help you determine the acne treatment approach that is most suited to you and your skin.” should be of outmost importance!

Interesting point about the moisturizer, especially since it can introduce a problem while you think it is helping.

I have a friend who has been in the skin care industry for 40 years. I have learned so much from her about a variety of skin care problems and solutions.
Here are two of her tips. Never use a moisturizer on your forehead or the nose. Oil from your scalp travels down to the forehead. If you forehead seems oily or is prone to breaking out, you might try a more gentle and less oily shampoo, or just condition the ends of your hair.

The reason you do not moisturize your nose is that it is cartilage ( not sure if I spelled that right-yay spell check). Your cartilage loves the moisture to allow it to keep growing. The nose will never stop growing so you can slow it down some. This is great news to me since I am Italian and my Roman Nose roams all over my face (family joke).

Ok, you talked me into one more tip: Do not pop those zits. There is a protective area at the top, and once you pop, although it seems to be the cure the bad bacteria has entered the wound and will add little volcanic zit buddies to your skin where there was only one eruption before you are gonna get more. Avoid the temptation to pop.
